Katie Powers
Assistant Dean of Advocacy
As both a former judge and prosecutor in the Atlanta metropolitan area, Assistant Dean of Advocacy Katie Powers brings a wealth of real-world trial and appellate experience to the Mercer University School of Law’s advocacy program. Before joining Mercer Law, Katie served as a prosecutor holding leadership positions to include Senior Assistant District Attorney, Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney, and Executive Assistant District Attorney by which she led the office’s Homicide Unit. After Judge Powers took the bench, she served on both the Superior Court of Clayton County and the State Court of Clayton County.
Katie is not only a graduate of Mercer University School of Law, but also a proud product of the Mercer advocacy program that she now leads. During her time at Mercer, Katie won the John C. Estes Moot Court Award, the ABA Criminal Mock Trial National Championship, and multiple best oralist and best advocate awards. Now, under her leadership, Mercer Law has won national championships in mock trial, moot court, negotiations, and client counseling competitions.
Katie teaches courses in trial advocacy, advanced evidence, and leads Mercer’s programming in criminal litigation. A hallmark of the Mercer advocacy program is that its principals, including Dean Powers, coach multiple advocacy competition teams each semester such that students can receive additional personalized training from the program’s leaders.
