Judicial Externship

Judicial Externship

Credit Hours: 3-4 hours
S/U Course
Offered: Fall and Spring
Open to: 2L and 3L

In this course, students will work as an intern for a judge. Students can arrange their own placement, but that is not necessary. Once registered for the course, students will have the opportunity to express preferences for specific courts, judges, or subject matter. The faculty will then place students with an appropriate judge.

Students will perform research and writing assignments for the judge and are expected to attend hearings, trials, and other proceedings to the extent possible. Students will submit a weekly journal to the instructor about reflections during the externship.

Course will meet as a group for two hours per week in a classroom setting. Much of that time will be spent discussing what members of the course have observed in their various placements. Because courts differ, these discussions provide valuable insights into different courts. Opportunities may also arise to read about and discuss topics related to the judiciary, such as judicial selection and discipline.

Students will elect to receive 3 or 4 credits, and must work in field placement at least 86 hours for 3 hours of credit or at least 126 hours for 4 hours of credit.

See Course Catalog for official description.

This course not only amplified my love for clerking, but also allowed us to learn more about the judicial system through weekly reflections about our varied experiences within our roles.
