Externship I

Externship I

Credit Hours: 3-12 hours
S/U Course
Offered: Fall and Spring
Open to: 2L and 3L

At Mercer Law, the general Externship course is designed to offer students practical work experience in public service offices (nonprofit, governmental, in-house, and on pro bono work undertaken by private counsel) under the direction of a faculty instructor. Under the appropriate supervision of licenses attorney-mentors, students explore subject areas of interest through a semester-long placement.

They also meet for a seminar with regular reading assignments, reflective journals, and class discussions, all of which help students learn through practice. In addition to gaining skills through the externship placement, understanding ethics in practice, students in the class explore themes of ethics in practice, form habits that promote wellbeing and introspection, and work toward building their unique professional identity.

See Course Catalog for official description.

The weekly seminars were not only a space for reflecting on my own work but also an opportunity to learn about other externships and legal opportunities in the local community. This exposure broadened my perspective on the various paths available in law and solidified my commitment to public interest work.
