Low Income Tax Clinic

Low Income Tax Clinic

Credit Hours: 3-4 hours
Graded Course
Offered: Spring
Open to: 2L and 3L

Students in the Low Income Tax Clinic represent clients in controversies with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Under the direction of Professor Monica Roudil, students interview and counsel clients, conduct necessary investigations, and ultimately negotiate agreements with the IRS. Participants may also represent clients in litigation in the United States Tax Court or assist with community outreach or education. Despite the intimidating nature of the subject matter, the course description encourages students to “enroll whether they have an existing interest in tax law and practice or simply seek an immersive law practice experience through which they can learn valuable skills and provide pro bono representation to those in need.” Though focused on a particular legal need, the Tax Clinic “teaches lawyering skills applicable across numerous practice areas.”

The Tax Clinic was one of the most formative and enjoyable experiences of law school. From personally assisting clients with their tax issues, to researching the complexities of the Tax Code, the knowledge I gained was invaluable.
