SBA President, Alexis Merritt

The Student Bar Association (SBA) serves as the student government at Mercer Law School and functions as the umbrella organization for all student groups. Every Mercer Law student is a member of the SBA. The SBA Board of Governors acts as the primary liaison between students and various stakeholders, including student organizations, the law school administration, the Macon Bar Association, the State Bar of Georgia, and the American Bar Association. The board is composed of class representatives and appointed members who serve on faculty and student committees, coordinate social events, host guest speakers, and organize community service initiatives.

“Our Student Bar Association leaders embody the spirit of service and collaboration at Mercer Law,” said Jeannie Zipperer, assistant dean for student affairs. “Their vision and commitment is to connect our community to the wider profession and inspire us to lead with purpose. I look forward to the work our new SBA President Alexis Merritt will do this year to continue building on that tradition.”

Alexis Merritt, Class of 2026, is a native of West Green, Georgia, and holds both undergraduate and graduate degrees in accounting from Georgia Southern University.

As SBA president, Merritt is focused on strengthening Mercer Law’s engagement with the Macon community through expanded volunteer opportunities and creating memorable experiences that she hopes will become lasting school traditions.

“Serving as SBA President has quickly become my most meaningful accomplishment in law school,” Merritt said. “It’s truly humbling to be selected by your peers to represent them. This role is not about holding a title—it’s about responsibility, service, and leadership. I see my classmates as my first clients, and I take seriously my duty to advocate for their ideas, concerns, and goals.”

Merritt served as an SBA class representative during her 1L and 2L years. She is an active member of the Mercer Advocacy Council’s Client Counseling Team and recently placed fifth in the nation with her partner Ynnel Banks, ’26. During her 2L year, she also served as chair of the Student Affairs committee. Currently, she represents LexisNexis as a brand ambassador, promoting the platform’s legal research tools and assisting fellow students in using these resources effectively in their legal studies and research.

In addition to earning her J.D., Merritt is completing a Certificate in Advanced Legal Writing, Research, and Drafting through Mercer Law’s nationally recognized Legal Writing Program—the first of its kind in the nation and still one of the few such programs in the country. She values the skills the certificate provides, particularly the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with courts and other attorneys, which she sees as essential to strong client advocacy.

Merritt is interested in pursuing a legal career in government, business, or estate planning. As an undergraduate, she interned with the Office of the Governor, where she worked closely with attorneys and experienced firsthand the fulfillment that comes from legal service. “I remember leaving work each day with a sense of purpose,” she said. “That’s when I knew I was meant to go to law school.”

During the summer, she worked for J. L. Williamson Law Group, LLC, a firm that specializes in elder law, asset protection, estate planning, tax planning, and tax controversy.

Outside of law school, Merritt enjoys playing pickleball with her husband Zenan and volunteering at the local Ronald McDonald House. And don’t be surprised if you spot her on the big screen—she was cast as an extra in the new Superman movie and had a blast filming scenes last summer.
