Bernadine Jackson

This September, Mercer Law School proudly shines its staff spotlight on Bernadine L. Jackson, the executive assistant to the dean of the law school. Bernadine’s journey to Mercer Law is one of dedication, adaptability, and a passion for supporting others.
Born and raised in Macon, GA, Bernadine spent an impressive 34 years as an administrative assistant with the Bibb County School District before retiring from K-12 public education. Her wealth of experience and organizational skills made her a perfect fit for higher education, and she began her career at Mercer Law School on March 7, 2022, as a faculty secretary. Just a few months later, on July 11, 2022, she transitioned into her current role.
In her position, Bernadine handles a wide range of responsibilities, including office management, travel arrangements, scheduling, document organization, and event coordination. Her role requires a high level of discretion and confidentiality, qualities she embodies with integrity and professionalism. Bernadine also collaborates closely with students, faculty, and external stakeholders, ensuring the dean’s initiatives are supported through effective communication, adaptability, and resilience.
“Bernadine is a critical member of the law school community,” Dean Karen J. Sneddon said. “She interfaces with everyone at the law school, offices across the university, and members of the bench and bar. Whether welcoming guests, keeping me on track, solving problems, or supporting events, Bernadine can handle it all.”
Bernadine is also a member of Mercer University’s Staff Council.
One of Bernadine’s proudest accomplishments at Mercer Law was her role in coordinating the visit of the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. She worked diligently with court clerks, U.S. Marshals, and other officials to ensure the visit was a success, earning a heartfelt letter of thanks from the judges and staff.
When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Bernadine highlights the opportunity to provide high-level support to the dean and ensure the smooth operation of day-to-day activities. She also cherishes the chance to witness the growth of Mercer Law students as they transform into accomplished graduates over their three years at the school.
Outside of work, Bernadine finds joy in mindfulness and meditation, listening to music, spending time with her family, and staying informed about national news. She is married to her loving husband, Eric Smith, and is a proud mother to two daughters, Erica Meredith-Dawson and Ebony Meredith, as well as a son-in-law, Elmer Dawson. Her family also includes four grandchildren: Elijah, Essence, Ensley, and Emmie.
Bernadine’s dedication, organizational expertise, and warm personality make her an invaluable member of the Mercer Law community. Her story is a testament to the impact one person can have in fostering a supportive and thriving environment for students, faculty, and staff alike.
Dean Sneddon said, “We all rely on Bernadine’s judgment, expertise, and talents. She is a dedicated, committed professional who makes each day at the law school a success.”
