Michael Dean joined Mercer University in 2007 as Mercer Law School’s chief financial and administrative officer. Dr. Dean oversees a broad range of services within the Law School including budget and planning, endowment spending, human resources, facilities operations, capital projects, administrative operations of the Mercer Law Review, continuing legal education programs, and faculty support services. He is a member of the Law School’s senior staff and advises the Dean and fellow senior staff members on operating strategies, resource allocations, and policy issues.
Dr. Dean is Visiting Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at Mercer’s College of Education where he teaches and advises doctoral students and serves on dissertation committees. His course topics include finance of higher education, education policy and politics, and organization theory and behavior. Dr. Dean’s research interests include philanthropy in higher education, higher education finance, and organization development.
Prior to joining Mercer, Dr. Dean spent 10 years in higher education management including positions in alumni and development and business operations at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. In the private sector, Dr. Dean worked as a financial auditor of health care providers and colleges and universities. He was a corporate financial analyst for Pepsi-Mid America and worked with J.P. Morgan (formerly BankOne) in their affinity bankcard division.
Dr. Dean holds his B.S. in Accounting, M.B.A., and Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His doctoral dissertation focusing on alumni giving to higher education is titled “Perceptions of Chief Development Officers About Factors That Influence Alumni Major Giving.” http://gradworks.umi.com/32/91/3291652.html
