Mary Donovan is Mercer Law School’s Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. Dean Donovan works with student organizations, the student bar association, and other groups to complete the Mercer Law School experience outside the classroom.

Prior to joining Mercer in 1990, Dean Donovan practiced law in Atlanta, concentrating on criminal defense, first with the Federal Public Defender program and then in private practice. Dean Donovan was lead counsel in extensive trial work for defendants in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and in Georgia’s Superior Courts. She also represented clients in appellant cases before the Fifth, later Eleventh, Circuit and before Georgia’s appellate courts, as well as in post-conviction remedy cases.

Dean Donovan also teaches at Mercer, offering an elective in federal criminal law and teaching in the third-year alternative dispute resolution program.

Dean Donovan was the founding chair of the board of directors of the Federal Defenders of the Middle District of Georgia, where she continues as a board member. She is also a committee member of the State Bar of Georgia’s Lawyer Assistance Program.

A graduate of Dartmouth College, Dean Donovan received her law degree from Emory University. She is a registered neutral in Georgia for mediation in civil and domestic cases.
