Dean Simson to Speak on the Role of Religion and Politics

On Monday, Oct. 15, Dean Gary Simson will be speaking at Temple Emanu-El as part of an annual event sponsored by an Atlanta-area Baptist-Jewish interfaith group entitled “Conversation on the Role of Religion and Politics: What we have Learned from the Past.” Dean Simson, a scholar on freedom of religion under the First Amendment, will discuss relevant constitutional principles as well as the Jewish perspective; and Walter Shurden, a professor Emeritus in Mercer's Christianity Department, will address the topic as an expert in the Baptist religion.

Howard Jump, ’79, appointed President of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel

In June 2012, Howard Jump, ’79, was appointed the 48th president of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel. The organization is a prestigious association of attorneys in Illinois who dedicate much of their practice to the representation of business, corporate, insurance and professional defendants in civil litigation.

Rafic H. Barrage, ’98, Joins Baker & McKenzie in Washington, D.C.

Rafic H. Barrage, ’98, joined the office of Baker & McKenzie in Washington, D.C. as a partner in September 2012. Baker & McKenzie is one of the most highly rated and recommended global tax practices worldwide. Barrage advises clients in several issues, including restructuring, IP migration, supply chain planning, e-commerce/cloud computing, repatriation planning and pre- and post-acquisition planning.

Victoria Darrisaw, ’93, elected State Court Judge of Dougherty County

Victoria Darrisaw, ’93, was elected as the State Court Judge of Dougherty County on July 31, 2012. Darrisaw was appointed to serve as aMagistrate for Dougherty County in 2009. Before that appointment, she worked as an assistant district attorney in the Dougherty and South Georgia Judicial Circuits. Earlier in her career, she served as a judicial law clerk for U.S. District Court Judge W. Louis Sands, ‘74 and Superior Court Judge Tommy Day Wilcox, ‘73.

Nathan Lee, ’83, appointed Circuit Court Judge

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell announced the appointment of Nathan Lee, ‘83, to Virginia’s Sixth Circuit Court Bench on Sep. 6, 2012. According to Article VI, Section 7 of the Constitution of Virginia, Lee will "serve until thirty days after the commencement of the next session of the General Assembly." Continued service on the Circuit Court will require election by the General Assembly.

Lee, a native of Hopewell, Va., has practiced law in Virginia for 29 years. He started his legal career with a small firm and has run a private practice for the last 18 years. He has served as a substitute judge for the last 20 months.
