Honorable William H. Pryor, Jr. to Speak at Mercer Law

William H. Pryor Jr., a judge in the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, will speak at Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law on Jan. 24. The presentation is titled “The Unbearable Rightness of Marbury v. Madison: Its Real Lessons and Irrepressible Myths,” and will be held in the Moot Court Room at noon. The event is free and open to the public.

In 2004, Pryor was appointed to the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. Prior to his appointment, he served as attorney general of Alabama from 1997 to 2004. From 1995 to 1997 he served as a deputy attorney general of Alabama. In private practice, he worked with the Birmingham law firms of Cabaniss, Johnston, Gardner, Dumas and O’Neal; and Walston, Stabler, Wells, Anderson and Bains. He clerked for Judge John Minor Wisdom of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. In law school, Pryor was editor-in-chief of the Tulane Law Review at Tulane University, where he received his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude. Pryor earned a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from Northeast Louisiana University, which is now the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Leslie Cadle to Join Staff as New Associate Director of Development and Director of Alumni Affairs

Dean Simson recently announced that, later this month, Leslie Cadle will be joining the Law School's senior staff in the newly created position of Associate Director of Development and Director of Alumni Affairs. A 2007 graduate of the Law School, she is currently practicing in the Law Firm of Kathy McArthur, and she has been active in the state and local bars and in Macon civic affairs. In heading the Law School's alumni affairs operation, Leslie will have primary responsibility for reviving and supporting the practice of class reunions and improving the alumni records database. In the development area, her principal focus will be doing prospect research, writing major gift proposals, and helping cultivate potential major gift donors.

Mercer Law School offers New LL.M. Degree in Federal Criminal Practice and Procedure

Mercer Law School next fall will begin offering a Master of Laws degree in Federal Criminal Practice and Procedure, the first of its kind in the nation. The one-year advanced legal degree will prepare graduates for careers in federal criminal law. The School has significant faculty expertise in both federal criminal prosecution and defense and the new degree will provide graduates with the depth of knowledge to pursue a career in federal criminal practice as a prosecutor, federal defender or private defense counsel.

Brazilian Judges to Visit Mercer Law School in Intercultural Learning Program

In a unique intercultural and educational judicial program, 19 federal judges from Brazil will participate in a 10-day experiential learning visit at Mercer University’s Walter F. George School of Law to better understand the United States legal system. During their visit, Nov. 1-10, the judges will attend law classes and panel discussions with Mercer Law School faculty and students, as well as area judges and lawyers.

Mercer Law School's 2nd Annual Moot Court Competition Results

Mercer Law School held the second annual moot court competition in legal ethics and professionalism on Oct. 20-22, and University of Georgia was crowned the 2011 winner, defeating Florida Coastal in the final round. Other awards given included best oralists from the final round, Miguel Trujillo, University of Georgia; best oralists from the preliminary rounds, Drew Parrish-Bennett, Florida Coastal; best respondent brief, St. John's University; and best petitioner brief, Faulkner University.
