Mercer law student auction benefits charities helping children in need
MACON, Ga. – Three organizations that provide critical help to children in need, including one of the leading children’s research centers in the country, will be the beneficiaries of more than $11,000 recently raised during the annual auction sponsored by the Association of Women Law Students at the Mercer University Walter F. George School of Law.
The three organizations – the local Sunshine House and Ronald McDonald House, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. – will receive proceeds from the estimated $11,218 raised during the 11th Annual AWLS Auction held March 19 at the Power Station. Within the last 11 years, the auction has raised more than $110,000.
The Sunshine House Children’s Advocacy Center is a local center where abused children can be examined and, if necessary, testify in a safe and child-friendly environment. The local Ronald McDonald House, affiliated with the national nonprofit organization, helps families of hospitalized children have a place to live close to their loved ones. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is one of the most respected cancer research centers in the United States.
AWLS decided to support St. Jude because a young child of a Mercer Law School employee is a cancer patient at the children’s hospital. The student organization supported both the Sunshine House and the Ronald McDonald House last year.
“The generosity of the Mercer Law community and businesses here in Macon allowed the Association of Women Law Students to raise over $11,000,” AWLS member and law student Jennifer Friend said.
“Last year, we were pleased to learn that our donation to the Sunshine House Childrens Advocacy Center helped fund a playground project. AWLS is committed to giving back to our community, and this year we hope contribute an even greater amount to these deserving charities.”
