WESTLAW and LEXIS Summer Access
Summer 2008

Only certain students qualify for continued summer access to the entire Lexis and Westlaw research systems. If you qualify, now is the time to register before they switch off law student access on June 1st.

If you have any questions or problems with registration, please see Denise Gibson, Assistant Law Librarian for Research Services, Room 219 in the law library, or email
gibson_dm@mercer.edu.

LEXIS – Register by May 31st

www.lexisnexis.com/lawschool

Just sign on to Lexis as usual and look for a link that says, "Extend your LexisNexis ID over the summer."

To be granted full access, you must verify that you will be doing one of the following:

Taking summer classes,
Working on a law school related research assignment,
Moot court research,
Law review or journal research,
Working as a faculty research assistant,
Working in a non-profit externship,
Working in an unpaid internship/externship,
Studying for the bar.

Unless you qualify for an extension, Lexis will shut off access by June 1, 2008. Passwords will be turned back to full access on August 1.

WESTLAW  - Register by May 31st

http://lawschool.westlaw.com/registration/summerextension.asp

There have been no changes in the Westlaw Summer Password Extension Program. As in past years, Westlaw will be provided to non-graduating law students participating in a qualifying summer activity:

    • Summer Law School Classes
    • Law Review or Journal work.
    • Project for a professor
    • Moot Court
    • Unpaid/non-profit public interest internship/externship or pro-bono work required for graduation
And studying for the bar (only graduating 3L's will see the link or banner for extending access if studying for the bar)

Courts and government agencies are not non-profit or public interest entities, therefore students with unpaid internships or externships are not eligible for the extension.

Students who are provided stipends, grants or funding by their schools or organizations for non-profit work over the summer are receiving compensation and are not eligible for a summer password extension.

Eligible students will need to register through lawschool.westlaw.com for the extension and they must agree that they will use their password for educational purposes.

Unless you qualify for an extension, Westlaw will shut off access by June 1, 2008.

Students not qualifying for a password extension will be given 2 hours of Westlaw access for the months of June and July. Passwords will be turned back to full access on August 1.
