After serving 43 years and 9 months in the Toombs Circuit as a prosecutor including 32 years as District Attorney, Dennis Sanders, CLA '69 and LAW '72, will retire at the end of this year. We talked to Sanders about his greatest accomplishments, his biggest challenges, and how Mercer Law impacted his career path. Sanders says, "During my years at Mercer, I found what I had hoped for and expected. I discovered a school with a great reputation for excellence, law professors that were not only challenging, but personable. But perhaps the largest unexpected impact from my law school experience was being part of a student body of so many future leaders. The one shared factor that seemed to be present in all of my classmates was the emphasis on the ethics and duties of our profession."

The symposium will feature nationally renowned scholars and will take place in the first-floor moot courtroom of Mercer Law School from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Rizza Palmares O’Connor, a double bear, graduated with a Bachelor in Business Administration in 2007 and a Juris Doctor degree in 2010. Since then, O’Connor has made her mark at home and in public service. O’Connor served as the Secretary of the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia from June 2015 to May 2016, and is currently serving as Treasurer. She was sworn in as Chief Magistrate Judge in November 2013, recognized as the first Filipino-American judge in Georgia. She was also the youngest Asian American to serve as a judge.

On Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 9:30 a.m. the Georgia Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments in the first-floor moot courtroom at Mercer Law School. The annual visit will provide an opportunity for students and the local community to observe the Court in action. The panel that will hear cases at the Law School includes Judge Herbert E. Phipps, presiding, Judge Stephen Louis A. Dillard and Judge Nels S.D. Peterson.

On August 15, we welcomed 145 members into the Mercer Law Class of 2019. The entering class consists of 48% women, 22% students of color, and 13 legacies. They came from 54 undergraduate institutions, represent 39 undergraduate majors, and an array of professional backgrounds varying from legal assistants to coaches to journalists. Our new students range in age from 20-49 with an average age of 25. Many of the students have philanthropic, and non-profit backgrounds that include the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and the American Cancer Society. They have volunteered with mission trips, participated in Special Olympics, and been tutors and college mentors.

Mercer Law School is pleased to announce the creation of the Young Alumni Council as of June 20, 2016. The YAC is led by 2005 graduate Justin B. Connell, who wanted to create a way for young alumni members to help each other and the Law School. The Council is made up of up to 30 members with two representatives from each class graduating in the last 15 years.

During the Mercer Mingle in Statesboro on May 19, 2016, three members of the Neville family, who proudly carry on this tradition, were present: W. Joe Neville, ’77; Register Municipal Judge Lovett Bennett, Jr., ’83; and Samuel Broucek, ’13.

Tomisha Stanford, a 2016 graduate of Mercer Law School, recently was selected as the individual recipient of the State Bar of Georgia Law School Excellence in Access to Justice Award. Stanford has worked internationally and locally to help increase access to justice through public interest law.
